Meningitis

Fucoidan in Wrack seaweed has been shown to reduce the accumulation of leukocytes and plasma protein in the cerbrospinal fluid (CSF) of rabbits with macterial meningitis (135). The inflammatory recruitment of leukocytes into the cerebrospinal fluid during bacterial meningitis has been shown to contribute to neurological damage.

Lectin extracted from Fucus species has been shown to have a toxic effect on some strains of E. coli and all strains tested of Neisseria meningitidis (137).
